Action Against Rapes

Chandigarh Women Demand Action Against Rapes

More than 300 people took to the streets of Chandigarh on Sunday to raise protest over Kathua rape case, and joined the league of thousands of protesters across other states in India in mass protest #NotInMyName. T aking to the streets, raising slogans, candlelight vigils… have been the familiar norm since Nirbhaya rape case in Delhi. Yet, cases of rape and crime against women have escalated since. This brings us back to the question, ‘Are protests enough to shake the government out of its slumber, as girls and women are being raped and grotesquely murdered?’ Social activist and counselor who specializes in grief counselling and works with the Panchkula Mahila police on cases, Renu Mathur has written an email to the Prime Minister, demanding intervention in a different level to address growing rape cases in India.

Pedophilia is a major part of all the crimes against women these days. Eight, 10, 11…these are the ages of the rape victims these days. This is power assertion and anger over women’s growth, which is boiling over and causing a shift in society. The fact that boys are superior to girls, is literally a genetic trait, and the men are asserting their superiority by raping women, sending out the message that, we can still ruin you sexually. If you realize, in each of the recent murders, there have been multiple injuries. You don’t need multiple injuries to kill an eight year old. This is nothing but pent up frustration and rage being expressed by men, unable to handle the progression of women. And what are we doing about this problem? We are addressing the result, not the cause. If protests worked, rapes would have stopped after Nirbhaya

“A protest is an outcry, it is the rage of public. Whatever effort anybody is putting for the cause, is worth it. At least it is better than doing nothing. We have proposed a women’s non-cooperation movement on May 10, to showcase their dissatisfaction over rapes becoming the new normal in the eyes of the government. Thousands of women are not going to work in offices, cook at home or do home chores. We are demanding justice and prevention, however the government achieves it, is up to them.

What can one ‘say’ anymore in these protests, over bone-chilling murders of these innocent girls. I have started an online petition two days ago, appealing for castration as punishment for rapists. “We are planning to move the High Court, and later maybe Supreme Court over the petition. Time for talking and protests has passed, it’s time to act now. I know lot of people say this is old school, but the fact is, pornography is so easily accessible is overcharging sexual energies, rather than giving a vent.
