Having actively assisted his father Balram Jakhar, a tall parliamentarian, for more than a decade, Sunil Jakhar had been seeking to enter Parliament for long.
The dream has finally become a reality. The grand old party, too, needed another member to raise issues on the floor of Lok Sabha powerfully.
Balram Jakhar was elected to the Lok Sabha from Ferozepur in 1980 and from Sikar in 1984. He served twice as Speaker of the Lok Sabha from 1980 to 1989.
Celebrations in home town
Hundreds of Congress workers came out on roads to celebrate Sunil Jakhar’s victory in his home town Abohar.
Councillor Ganesh Sablania and Bhim Tank Murder Action Committee convener Gopi Chand Sandar led a procession through slum areas having a majority of the town’s Dalit population.
District Congress president and four-time councillor Vimal Thatai, who had campaigned in Batala, said Gurdaspur had made a wise choice by acknowledging Jakhar’s personality and vision.
Senior Congress activist Mohan Lal Gupta, who had campaigned in Qadian and Gurdaspur, said it was a historic win for Jakhar as well as the party.
Veteran educationist Malika Sharma said the selfless service that Jakhar had rendered in the state in the past two decades had paid off.
