Bhakra Canal Suicide

Missing Mohali College Girl Found Dead In Bhakra Canal

22-yr-old blames none in ‘suicide note’ recovered by kin

A week after a 22-year-old girl, a BCom student of Government College in Phase VI here, went missing, her body was recovered from the Bhakra canal at Bheora village in Rupnagar on Thursday night.

Manpreet Kaur, a resident of Bhagwantpura village in Rupnagar, had gone to her college in Phase VI, Mohali, on April 27 but did not return home, following which her father Kulwant Singh lodged a missing person’s complaint at the Phase VI police post.

Police sources said prima facie, it seemed to be a case of suicide.
Divers fished out the body from the canal and informed the police around 9 pm on Thursday. A purse, her bus pass, a passport size photograph and a notebook were found near the spot.

ASI Dilbag Singh, incharge, Phase VI police post, said the victim’s family had recovered a suicide note allegedly written by her.

The note addressed to the family reads: “Main apne shareer toh tang han. Iss layi mein jaa rhi haan (I am upset over my body. So, I am going).”

The police said in the alleged suicide note, the victim pleaded forgiveness for her act and did not hold anyone responsible.

According to the police, the post-mortem examination of the body was conducted on Friday. A police official said no injury marks were found on the body.

The police have initiated inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC).
