Products Services: National Agri-Food Biotechnology Institute National Agri-Food Biotechnology Institute (NABI) is the first Agri-Food Biotechnology Institute, established in India on 18th February 2010, to develop high calibre research at the interface of Agriculture, Food and Nutrition biology. The Union Cabinet gave approval for the establishment of National Agri-Food Biotechnology Institute (NABI) as an autonomous institute of the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India on 21st August 2008. The institute have the vision to be a nodal organization for knowledge generation and translational science leading to value added products based on agri-food biotech innovations. The institute is part of agri-food cluster in the “Knowledge City” of Mohali (Punjab) along with its neighbouring institutes.

The main focus of NABI research work is to harness biotechnological tools in the area of Agriculture Biotechnology, Food Science and Technology and Nutritional Science and Technology so as to provide sustainable and novel solutions towards quality food and nutrition. The five major areas of the institute includes, a) Improving Cereals for nutrition and processing quality; b) Improving fruits for post-harvest quality and nutrition; c) Basic Biology for crop improvement; d)Functional food for better health and e) Genomics and Computational biology for marker and gene discovery. NABI is currently working towards developing approaches for biofortification and processing of staple cereals/fruits, post-harvest improvement in quality of produce, malnutrition , functional food development and genome analysis of various crops/microbes . The institute is working in the directions to develop improved wheat lines/varieties with low phytic acid (antinutrient) content and high micronutrient content with better processing and nutritional qualities, provitamin-A rich Indian banana lines, post harvest improvements in shelf life and quality of fruits, development of functional foods and formulations, and dietary recommendations. Besides, NABI has an important mandate for the development of skilled human resource in the above mentioned areas, through doctoral, post-doctoral programmes, training and workshops. The institute has developed strong linkages with National and International organizations and industries.
