The Punjab government has decided to ban Chinese string (manjha used for kite flying) made up of nylon thread and other synthetic threads.
The decision comes in view of its adversely affecting the human beings, cattle population, birds, soil and ecology.
The government has issued a notice calling for suggestions, objections as to why the Chinese string should not be banned in the state.
The use of this string which is a non-biodegradable and good conductor of electricity results in, many times, flash over on the power lines causing power interruption, killing the birds which are entangled in this string and sometimes resulting in fatal human accidents.
The chairman of the Punjab Pollution Control Board Kahan Singh Pannu said in the light of danger caused by this string to the environment and human health, the government has proposed a complete ban on its manufacturing, sale, distribution, transportation and use in the state.
The government has issued a 30-day notice asking for the objections and suggestions under the provisions of Environment Protection Act 1986.
Pannu said after the imposition of ban, any person selling or using the Chinese string for kite flying would be liable for punishment for a period of five years and a fine up to Rs. 1 lakh.
